Washington finally traded Bradley Beal after months of speculation. They were once again a mediocre team last season as they never showed that they could be a contender but they also had too much talent and experience on their roster to be outright awful.
2023/24 OUTLOOK:
Normally, when teams trade their franchise player, they start a rebuild process with their rosters being full of young and inexperienced players. However, this won’t be the case of Washington who will continue to have on their roster plenty of veteran players who can form a solid rotation but who aren’t good enough to form an elite unit.
The Wizards received Tyus Jones from Memphis, a player who was a serviceable backup for Ja Morant. They also received Jordan Poole from Golden State, a player who will have green light in DC to make his usual Steph Curry impersonation. These two players will form the starting backcourt for the Wizards this season and if offensively things might work well at times, I fear that Washington’s backcourt defense will suffer big time this season.
Washington drafted Bilal Coulibaly with the #7 overall pick but he doesn’t seem ready to make an immediate impact on his rookie season.
The Wizards will then have a group of veteran players (Kyle Kuzma, Danilo Gallinari, Delon Wright and Mike Muscala) who will be solid contributors to the team and possibly nice pieces to be traded later in the year. Washington is yet to assume that they are now entering a rebuilding process, but I believe this will be inevitable as the team lacks a real superstar who can make them a contender.
